Evaluation of sperm DNA fragmentation and chromatin structure in infertile men with immotile short-tail sperm defect

Andrologia Nov 07, 2019

Atshan M, et al. - Semen samples were collected from 31 infertile men with immotile short-tail sperm (ISTS) as case group and 31 normozoospermic men as a control group in order to assess the levels of chromatin packing and DNA fragmentation in individuals with immotile short-tail sperm defect. The percentage of positive chromomycin A3 spermatozoa and mean of sperm DNA fragmentation were markedly higher in individuals’ samples vs controls, as latter measured by TUNEL assay and sperm chromatin structure assay. In conclusion, in the ISTS vs normal samples, sperm DNA fragmentation and chromatin packing abnormality are significantly greater. Moreover, a potential description for this association could be that sperm chromatin condensation and sperm flagellum formation happens during the same phase of spermatogenesis.
