Evaluation of schistosomiasis mansoni morbidity by hepatic and splenic elastography
Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology Feb 26, 2021
Pereira CLD, Santos JC, Arruda RM, et al. - In patients with Mansoni schistosomiasis, the severity of periportal fibrosis (PPF) and parameters of portal hypertension, as analyzed by ultrasonography (US), reflect the disease morbidity. Researchers here examined the morbidity of schistosomiasis by hepatic and splenic point shear-wave elastography (pSWE) and determined its correlation with US parameters. US was used to determine the PPF pattern, the diameter of the portal and splenic veins and the size of the spleen. Thereafter, evaluation of liver and spleen pSWEs was done in 74 patients utilizing the same equipment. Significant relationships were observed between splenic pSWE, the longitudinal and transverse lengths of the spleen and the diameters of the portal and splenic veins. However, these findings were not noted through hepatic pSWE. Based on the finding, they suggest a potential utility of the splenic pSWE for assessing morbidity in schistosomiasis mansoni.
