Evaluation of central and peripheral neuropathy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
International Journal of COPD Jun 17, 2018
Aras YG, et al. - In this study including COPD patients and healthy volunteers, researchers determined the frequency and characteristics of peripheral nervous system (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS) involvement in COPD. They found that the patient group vs the control group exhibited significantly prolonged latencies and shortened amplitudes on visual evoked potential (VEP) examination. Electromyography (EMG) measurements in the patient group revealed low conduction velocity and amplitudes in all nerves. Similarly, COPD patients showed higher latencies in all nerves. Overall, the involvement of central and peripheral nervous system could be seen in patients with moderate–severe COPD. These patients deserve surveillance for neuropathic changes in combination with neurological examination.
