Evaluation of body composition as a potential biomarker in spinal muscular atrophy
Muscle & Nerve Feb 08, 2020
Baranello G, De Amicis R, Arnoldi MT, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers explored the link between body composition (BC) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)-specific motor function assessments. Participants in the study were children (n = 88; aged 1 to 10 years) with SMA types I or II. The protocol involved: anthropometric measurements; DEXA to evaluate fat mass (FM), lean mass (LM), fat-free mass (FFM), FM and FFM indexes (FMI, FFMI), and motor function assessments (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Infant Test of Neuromuscular Disorders scale for SMAI; Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale-Expanded for SMAII). All participants had a higher FM percentage compared with reference values. Motor function was associated moderately with BMI, FFMI, and LMI in SMAI, and weakly correlated with FFMI, LMI and LM:FM ratio in SMAII. BC exhibits promise as a potential biomarker for SMA but it requires further studies.
