Evaluating the impact of uveitis on visual field progression using large-scale real-world data
American Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 06, 2019
Liu X, Kelly SR, Montesano G, et al. - Use real-world electronic medical records data, researchers, for the first time, contrasted rates of visual field (VF) loss in uveitis patients with glaucoma against patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and analyzed the connection between intraocular pressure (IOP) and rate of VF loss. A total of 205 eyes with uveitis plus glaucoma diagnosis were compared with 4,600 eyes with POAG only. According to this retrospective cohort study, VF loss occurs faster in glaucoma patients with uveitis compared with those without uveitis. The risk of rapid progression of glaucoma with uveitis is nearly twice than in those without uveitis. In this high-risk group, early detection of "rapid progressors" will require targeted intervention to preserve visual function. In the “rapidly progressing” uveitic eyes, IOP range and variability were higher.
