Evaluating the impact of uveitis on visual field progression using large scale real-world data
American Journal of Ophthalmology Jul 02, 2019
Liu X, et al. - Utilizing real-world data from glaucoma clinics in England, researchers compared rates of visual field (VF) loss in uveitis patients with glaucoma against patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and examined the connection between intraocular pressures (IOP) and rate of VF loss. For this retrospective cohort study, they compared 205 eyes with a diagnosis of “uveitis” plus “glaucoma” with 4600 eyes with “POAG” only. Minimum criteria for inclusion was ≥4 visits within a 4-year window. In glaucoma patients with uveitis, VF loss occurs more rapidly than those without uveitis. Findings revealed that the risk of rapid progression with uveitis in glaucoma is nearly twice as high as in those without uveitis. In this high-risk group, early identification of "rapid progressors" may allow targeted intervention to preserve visual function. The authors recommend a low threshold for glaucoma screening in uveitis patients, even if IOP is within normal limits and especially in the presence of a fluctuating IOP.
