Evaluating short term outcomes post intra-articular calcaneal fracture fixation via a sinus tarsi approach in a non-exclusively selected cohort
The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery Oct 09, 2020
Davey MS, Staunton P, Lambert LA, et al. - This research was sought to distinguish the characteristics of individuals who developed surgical complications to inform the future stratification of individuals best suited to operative treatment for intra-articular calcaneal fractures. Between March 2014 and July 2018, all patients who had undergone open reduction and internal fixation of calcaneal fractures utilizing the Sinus Tarsi approach were distinguished applying theatre records. Researchers applied patient imaging to evaluate pre- and post-operative fracture geometry with Computed Tomography used for pre-operative planning. The data demonstrate that the Sinus Tarsi approach serves the potential to reduce the operative complication rate whilst maintaining adequate fixation, nevertheless, the decision to surgically manage these fractures should be carefully balanced against the risk of postoperative complications. The results revealed that this elevated risk of complications correlated with smoking may tip the balance against benefit from surgical management.
