Evaluating burden and quality of life among caregivers of patients receiving peritoneal dialysis
Peritoneal Dialysis International Mar 16, 2019
Kang A, et al. - Among 44 caregivers of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients (mean age 38.4 ± 6.3 years; 60% female) in Singapore, the changes in burden and quality of life (QOL) over 12 months were determined. From these subjects, data were obtained at baseline and 12 months. Researchers used measures including demographics, the Lay Care-Giving for Adults Receiving Dialysis (LC-GAD), Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life instrument (WHOQOL-BREF) to assess the participants. Although a decrease in task-related aspects of caregiving was noted, caregivers experienced an increased burden and reduced psychological health, and therefore, the “wear-and-tear” hypothesis can be further explored in this population and intervention strategies are required.
