Etiologies of olfactory dysfunction in a pediatric population: Based on a retrospective analysis of data from an outpatient clinic

European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Jun 27, 2020

Schriever VA, et al. - Researchers sought to identify the epidemiology of olfactory dysfunction in a pediatric population and compare the distribution of etiologies to adults through a retrospective review of data from patients visiting a smell and taste clinic between 2000 and 2017. Frequency of major causes of olfactory dysfunction with a focus on the pediatric population has been investigated. Participants in the study were 7,153 patients (164 children). Most of the children had congenital olfactory dysfunction (67%), or head-trauma (12%). According to findings, approximately 2/3 of olfactory dysfunction in children are congenital while 1/3 is acquired. The frequency of olfactory dysfunction causing etiologies significantly changes from children to adult population.
