Epidemiology of invasive group B Streptococcal infections among nonpregnant adults in the United States, 2008-2016
JAMA Internal Medicine Feb 24, 2019
Watkins LKF, et al. - Using population-based surveillance data, researchers updated trends of invasive group B Streptococcus (GBS) disease among US adults. Data reported that the incidence of GBS in this population increased from 8.1 cases in 2008 to 10.9 in 2016 per 100,000 population. The incidence of GBS among men was higher than among women, and blacks than whites, and increased with age. In this population-based study of 21,250 patients with invasive group B Streptococcus detected by the Active Bacterial Core surveillance network from 2008 through 2016, the burden of invasive GBS disease on public health among adults who are not pregnant is considerable and is still increasing. Chronic diseases (such as obesity and diabetes) may play a part as well.
