Epidemiology of herpes simplex virus type 2 in Latin America and the Caribbean: Systematic review, meta-analyses and metaregressions
Sexually Transmitted Infections Jun 09, 2021
Harfouche M, et al. - Researchers sought to report on the epidemiology of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in Latin America and the Caribbean. They systematically reviewed and synthesised HSV-2 reports, and reported the findings following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. They identified 102 relevant reports including 13 overall incidence measures, 163 overall (and 402 stratified) seroprevalence measures, and 7 and 10 proportions of virus detection in genital ulcer disease and in genital herpes, respectively. In this region, HSV-2 infection was reported in one in five adults, a higher level than other world regions, but a decline was recorded in seroprevalence. Despite this decline, persistence of HSV-2 was observed as the aetiological cause of nearly half of GUD cases and almost all of genital herpes cases.
