Epidemiology of cutaneous porphyria in Israel: A nationwide cohort study
Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Jul 05, 2019
Edel Y, et al. - In this retrospective study involving all patients who were diagnosed with cutaneous porphyrias (CPs) between the years 1988-2018, researchers described the epidemiology of CPs in Israel, including distribution, incidence and prevalence rates of major types. Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) patient characteristics differed from those with other CPs due to the absence of family history, older diagnostic mean age, and masculine predominance. All PCT patients were diagnosed at adulthood, while 20%, 19%, and 15% of variegate porphyria (VP), hereditary coproporphyria, and erythropoietic protoporphyria patients were diagnosed at childhood or adolescence, respectively. It has been found that variegate porphyria and PCT are the most prevalent in Israel. However, CPs may be underdiagnosed, so it is very essential for dermatologists to be aware of these rare disorders.
