Epidemiology of childhood hyperthyroidism in France: A nationwide population-based study
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Aug 13, 2018
Simon M, et al. - Using a cross-sectional descriptive study, researchers carried out a nationwide epidemiological survey of hyperthyroidism in children and adolescents to provide epidemiological data. They analyzed all cases of childhood hyperthyroidism (6 months to 17 years of age) in 2015. The estimated annual incidence for 2015 was 4.58/100,000 person-years. With age, increase in incidence was seen in both sexes. This increase was stronger in girls and accelerated after the age of 8 in girls; in boys it accelerated after the age of 10. Compared with boys, the likelihood of girls being affected was 3.2 times more in the 10 to 14 years age group, and 5.7 times more in the 15 to 17 years age group. They noted that the observed incidence was higher than expected from the results published for earlier studies in Northern European countries.
