Epidemiology and outcome of idiopathic generalized epilepsy in adults
European Journal of Neurology Jan 29, 2020
Gesche J, et al. - In an unbiased, population-based cohort, researchers characterized the incidence, prevalence, and outcome of idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE). All patients (≥ 17 years) with IGE inhabiting the island of Funen (496,000 inhabitants) were selected in 2014–2018. The socioeconomic and clinical information available for 406 people was evaluated. Data reported that the average IGE incidence (2008–2017) was 2.9/100,000 inhabitants/year. One hundred twenty-one patients reported seizures in the year before data closure. Findings suggested an association of idiopathic generalized epilepsy with a low risk of persistent drug-resistant seizures requiring specialist medical attention. An association was found between drug resistance and a negative socioeconomic outcome.
