Epidemiology and clinical features of viral anterior uveitis in southern Taiwan—Diagnosis with a polymerase chain reaction
BMC Ophthalmology Apr 06, 2019
Hsiao YT, et al. - Aqueous samples from 102 eligible eyes were reviewed to analyze the epidemiology as well as clinical characteristics of viral anterior uveitis in subjects in southern Taiwan. Researchers observed 42 eyes herpesviridae-positive including 9 eyes with herpes simplex virus, 5 with varicella-zoster virus (4.9%), 27 with cytomegalovirus (26.5%), and 1 with Epstein-Barr virus (1%). They noted more Herpesviridae-positive incidence in males and candidates with glaucoma. Significant association of glaucoma and pseudophakic eyes with cytomegalovirus (CMV)-positive eyes. They suggested the PCR analysis of the anterior chamber fluid necessary to confirm the diagnosis of viral anterior uveitis. They reported cytomegalovirus anterior uveitis prevalent following uneventful cataract extraction in immunocompetent subjects.
