Eosinophil counts in first COPD hospitalizations: A comparison of health service utilization
International Journal of COPD Oct 07, 2018
Belanger M, et al. - Using an observational cohort study design, researchers examined readmission outcomes associated with blood eosinophilia following severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation in patients with infrequent COPD hospitalizations. They collected and retrospectively analyzed data from 479 patients with a first hospitalization within 5 years of COPD exacerbation (April 2006–March 2013). Those with blood eosinophil count on admission of ≥ 200 cells/µL and/or ≥ 2% of the total white blood cell count were stratified into the eosinophilic group. According to findings, increased COPD readmission rates were documented in relation to higher blood eosinophil cell count at admission for a COPD exacerbation. The groups did not differ in terms of all-cause mortality, all-cause readmission, length of stay, and/or number of ambulatory visits.
