Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) at cesarean to reduce postoperative length of stay: A randomized controlled trial
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nov 03, 2019
Teigen NC, Sahasrabudhe N, Doulaveris G, et al. - Researchers investigated whether the implementation of an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathway at the time of cesarean birth may aid in reducing the postoperative length of stay and improving postoperative patient satisfaction compared with standard perioperative care (SC). They randomized 58 patients undergoing nonemergent cesarean delivery at ≥ 37 weeks of gestation to either ERAS or SC. Outcomes revealed no correlation of ERAS after cesarean with an increase in the number of women discharged on postoperative day 2, but this may be due to factors other than patients’ medical readiness for discharge. They observed a reduction in overall postoperative length of stay, improved patient satisfaction and an increase in breastfeeding rates providing evidence supporting the potential of ERAS after cesarean in improving outcomes such as day of discharge. With more provider and patient experience with ERAS, even better results may accumulate.
