Energy drinks induce acute cardiovascular and metabolic changes pointing to potential risks for young adults: A randomized controlled trial

The Journal of Nutrition Mar 14, 2019

Basrai M, et al. - In this randomized, crossover trial, researchers examined 38 adults (19 females; mean BMI 23 kg/m2; mean age 22 years) to assess the relationship between energy drinks (EDs) and adverse effects, including death. They observed an increase in systolic BP (116.9 ± 10.4 to 120.7 ± 10.7 mmHg) and a QTc prolongation (393.3 ± 20.6 to 400.8 ± 24.1 ms) 1 hour following administration of an ED. They also recorded an increase in BP 1 hour following caffeine consumption, but it returned to normal after a few hours. This effect was not seen with taurine or glucuronolactone. They also found adverse impacts in cases of insulin sensitivity in young, healthy people with a single high-volume ED intake.
