Endoscopic biliary stenting as the risk factor for cholangitis after endoscopic ultrasound in patients with biliary strictures
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Sep 25, 2020
Ikezawa K, Shigekawa M, Yamai T, et al. - Given that endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and EUS‐guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) are established as efficient and safe diagnostic modalities, researchers sought to analyze the risk of cholangitis after EUS/EUS‐FNA (post‐EUS cholangitis) in patients who have biliary strictures. Retrospectively, 136 consecutive inpatients with biliary strictures who received EUS/EUS‐FNA at the hospital from April 2012 to September 2017 were examined and complications that occurred the following day after EUS/EUS-FNA were evaluated. One hundred twenty-one patients (147 cases) were included; 90 patients were malignant. Endoscopic biliary stenting (EBS) was identified in patients with biliary strictures as a risk factor associated with post-EUS cholangitis. Post-EUS cholangitis, particularly in cases with EBS and biliary enzyme elevation, should be considered by endoscopists.
