Endophthalmitis rates and clinical outcomes following penetrating and endothelial keratoplasty
American Journal of Ophthalmology May 21, 2019
Borkar DS, et al. - In order to evaluate endophthalmitis rates following penetrating keratoplasty (PK) vs endothelial keratoplasty (EK), researchers electronically queried the medical and billing records of several large academic private practices in Philadelphia, PA for all surgical visits during which a PK or EK was performed. In addition, they compared the procedure regarding clinical outcomes. In 3,069 patients, 1,676 PKs and 2,292 EKs were performed during the study period. Outcomes revealed low rates of endophthalmitis for both procedures in these patients. Compared to PK, EK led to significantly lower endophthalmitis rates. They noted poorer visual acuity outcomes and graft prognosis for eyes with endophthalmitis after PK compared to eyes with endophthalmitis after EK.
