End-stage renal disease patients with low serum albumin: Is peritoneal dialysis an option?
Peritoneal Dialysis International Nov 28, 2019
Singh T, et al. - Researchers examined the United States Renal Data System data from 2010 to 2015 to assess mortality depending on dialysis modality in patients having very low serum albumin (< 2.5 g/dL). They analyzed mortality by modality adjusted for age, gender, race, employment, number of comorbidities, and year of dialysis commencement. Among 395,656 patients with end-stage renal disease on chronic dialysis, the presence of low serum albumin (< 2.5 g/dL) was found in 78,625 (19.9%). They found that among patients with low serum albumin needing dialysis, there was less probability of peritoneal dialysis to be the first dialysis modality. However, lower mortality was observed in relation to peritoneal dialysis (PD) vs hemodialysis in patients with low serum albumin on dialysis. Supporting the use of PD in patients with low serum albumin was advised.
