Emotion dysregulation and non-suicidal self-injury: A systematic review and meta-analysis
European Psychiatry Apr 19, 2019
Wolff JC, et al. - Given the increasing rates of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and its significance as a critical risk factor for suicidal behavior, researchers performed a comprehensive meta-analytic review of the literature on the relationship between NSSI and emotion dysregulation. As per findings, there appeared a correlation of greater emotion dysregulation with higher risk for NSSI. This correlation was evident regardless of age or sex. NSSI was noted to be most strongly associated with emotion dysregulation subscales, including limited access to regulation strategies, non-acceptance of emotional responses, impulse control difficulties, and difficulties engaging goal-directed behavior. NSSI seems to be weakly yet significantly correlated with lack of emotional awareness/clarity and cognitive aspects of dysregulation.
