Emergency department visit within one year prior to elective total joint arthroplasty is predictive of postoperative return to emergency department within 90 days
Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 17, 2019
Gabbard MD, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of 6996 subjects who underwent elective primary arthroplasty (2453 hips, 4543 knees), investigators researched whether preoperative Emergency Department (ED) visits were predictive of postoperative ED visits among such cases. An odds ratio of returning to the emergency room postoperatively were 1.9 and 2.0, respectively, among subjects with TKA and THA with a single preoperative ED visit. A linear relationship was reported between increasing preoperative visit frequency and increasing odds ratios. They concluded that an increase in preoperative visit frequency led to an increase in a patient's risk of a postoperative visit within 90 days.
