P. Intermedia and periodontitis are associated with severe asthma
Journal of Periodontology Jul 31, 2019
Lopes MP, Cruz AA, Xavier MT, et al. - Researchers conducted this case-control study to assess the levels of periodontal pathogens Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in the subgingival biofilm of people with and without severe asthma. This investigation was carried out at the Program for Control of Asthma in Bahia Clinic located in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Study participants included 457 people (220 with asthma and 237 without asthma). Investigators found that periodontitis and P. intermedia were linked to severe asthma. The functional effects of this dysbiosis on susceptibility to asthma and its phenotypes, however, remain uncertain.
