Acanthamoeba keratitis vs mixed acanthamoeba and bacterial keratitis: Comparison of clinical and microbiological profiles
Cornea Aug 08, 2020
Singh A, Sahu SK, Sharma S, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective analysis to compare the clinical profiles and outcomes of patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis with or without mixed bacterial infection. Microbiologically confirmed AK cases presenting to a tertiary care center over a 9-year period were included in this analysis. Fourteen eyes in the coinfected group (group 1) and 24 eyes in the AK group (group 2) have been analyzed to study the differences in these 2 groups of patients. No difference was found in the demographic profile and presenting features in the 2 groups. In addition, the duration of symptoms and history of ocular trauma, contact lens wear, and previous steroid usage were comparable for both the groups. The common presentation for both groups was dense central corneal infiltrate. Staphylococcus species was the most common bacterial pathogen isolated in the mixed group. In patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis, bacterial coinfection is common. Coinfection did not indicate worse clinical illness at presentation or outcome.
