Elevated glyca in severe obesity is normalized by bariatric surgery

Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Aug 04, 2018

Manmadhan A, et al. - Since obese individuals display elevated GlycA (a marker of systemic inflammation with lower intraindividual variability than hsCRP), researchers investigated if weight loss influences GlycA. They prospectively assessed obese (BMI 44.6±6.6kg/m2), non-diabetic women (33.7±8.2 years) undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (n=23) or sleeve gastrectomy (n=31) at baseline, 6, and 12 months post-procedure. Findings showed a significant reduction in GlycA following bariatric surgery by 6 months; it was further reduced at 12 months, with no difference between the procedures. This study, for the first time, demonstrated a marked reduction in levels of GlycA consequent to surgical weight loss.
