Respiratory Medicine Mar 29, 2019
Rubio-Rivas M, et al. - In elderly patients with sarcoidosis, researchers assessed the clinical characteristics and outcomes in this retrospective study. They thereafter compared the findings with younger patients. This study included 668 consecutive sarcoidosis patients who were prospectively gathered during 42 years at a tertiary care single-centre in Barcelona, Spain. Sarcoidosis diagnosed in patients ≥65 years-old was considered as elderly sarcoidosis. According to the findings, a high index of suspicion is needed for sarcoidosis in elderly patients. Compared to younger patients, more severe disease at presentation and worse outcomes were observed among aged pulmonary sarcoidosis patients. In elderly sarcoidosis, more frequent were isolated extrapulmonary involvement at diagnosis and certain particular extrapulmonary organ involvement and less frequent was remission.
