Elderly sarcoidosis: A comparative study from a 42-year single-centre experience
Respiratory Medicine May 27, 2019
Rubio-Rivas M, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers examined elderly patients with sarcoidosis for clinical features and outcomes and compared those with findings in younger patients. The definition of elderly sarcoidosis was sarcoidosis diagnosed in patients ≥65 years-old. They included prospectively recruited 668 consecutive patients with sarcoidosis. Based on findings, they concluded that a high index of suspicion is needed for sarcoidosis in elderly patients. More severe disease at presentation and worse outcomes were seen among aged pulmonary sarcoidosis patients vs younger patients. Elderly sarcoidosis was more frequently characterized by isolated extrapulmonary involvement at diagnosis and certain particular extrapulmonary organ involvement. In elderly sarcoidosis, less frequent remission was observed.
