Eight-year incidence of open-angle glaucoma in the Tema Eye Survey
Ophthalmology Mar 01, 2019
Mwanza JC, et al. - In this longitudinal, observational population-based study in the Tema Eye Survey in Ghana, West Africa, 5603 candidates were analyzed to assess the incidence of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) along with its risk factors. They determined the diagnosis of glaucoma based on the International Society for Geographical and Epidemiologic Ophthalmology criteria. Incline in the 8-year incidence with age from 3.1% in those 40 to 49 years old to 7.0% in those 60 to 69 years old was observed. Male sex, older age relative to those 40 to 49 years old, higher intraocular pressure, larger vertical cup-to-disc ratio, and thinner central cornea were the baseline risk factors for incident OAG. A higher incidence of OAG as compared to reported in nonblack populations outside Africa was noticed.
