Efficacy of therapeutic soft contact lens in the management of gelatinous drop-like corneal dystrophy
British Journal of Ophthalmology Apr 29, 2019
Maeno S, et al. - In this retrospective, consecutive, observational case series, the effectiveness of therapeutic soft contact lenses (SCLs) in gelatinous drop-like corneal dystrophy (GDLD) management was investigated among 20 patients (40 eyes) with GDLD treated in Osaka University Hospital. A significantly lower rate of progression was recorded in GDLD nodular lesions in patients wearing SCLs as compared to those who did not. They observed no significant improvements in visual acuity. They did not find suppressant effects regarding opacity and neovascularization. They noted 2770 ± 1918 days, the surgery-free survival time for all 16 SCL-on eyes which was significantly longer as compared to that for 22 SCL-off eyes, 1342 ± 1323 days. Extension of time was suggested with therapeutic SCL until surgical intervention.
