Efficacy of phacoemulsification alone vs phacoemulsification with goniosynechialysis in patients with primary angle-closure disease: A randomized clinical trial
JAMA Ophthalmology Oct 22, 2019
Husain R, Do T, Lai J, et al. - Via analyzing data from 78 patients (78 eyes), mean (SD) age was 67.7 (8.9) years, researchers compared the intraocular pressure (IOP) outcome after 1 year in patients with synechial primary angle-closure disease (PACD) and cataract who had phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation (PEI) alone vs PEI with goniosynechialysis (PEI-GSL). Study participants were randomized to undergo PEI alone or PEI-GSL. Both phacoemulsification alone and phacoemulsification with GSL after 1 year achieved a reduction of IOP of approximately 7 to 8 mmHg. This trial was unable to prove that in patients with PACD, PEI-GSL added additional IOP reduction relative with PEI alone.
