Efficacy of intraoperative antiseptic techniques for prevention of periprosthetic joint infection: Superiority of betadine

Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 15, 2019

Cichos KH, et al. - In this study, researchers evaluated the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and time to death for povidone-iodine (PI), chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), and vancomycin powder (VANC) against multiple bacteria [Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), Staphylococcus epidermidis, Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Burkholderia cepacia, and Escherichia coli] and time to death against bacteria dried on titanium discs. They noticed the MIC for PI, 0.63%, for CHG, 0.0031%, and for VANC, 1.56 μg/mL. They noted that all 7 bacterial isolates were completely killed by PI only, at all times tested.
