Efficacy of antioxidant therapy on sperm quality measurements after varicocelectomy: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Andrologia Aug 27, 2019
Wang J, Wang T, Ding W, et al. - Via a systematic review and a meta-analysis of six studies including 576 patients, researchers assessed the efficiency of antioxidant therapy in sperm parameters' quality following varicocelectomy during 3 or 6 months' treatment cycle. Notable improvements of sperm concentration, sperm motility, progressive sperm motility, and sperm morphology existed in the antioxidant group 3 months following varicocelectomy, as for sperm parameters. Sperm parameters were advanced as well except sperm motility and progressive sperm motility, relative to the 6 months' outcomes. No meaningful variation existed among two groups, referring to pregnancy rate, and the FSH level of the antioxidant group was lower vs placebo group 3 or 6 months following varicocelectomy. Thus, compared with the placebo, the antioxidant therapy following varicocelectomy can enhance the quality of sperm parameters and build a favorable living condition for spermatozoa by decreasing the FSH level.
