Efficacy of a single administration of 5% povidone-iodine in the treatment of adenoviral conjunctivitis
American Journal of Ophthalmology Jun 09, 2021
Than T, Morettin CE, Harthan JS, et al. - In this double-masked pilot randomized trial, researchers tested the safety and effectiveness of a single, in-office administration of 5% povidone-iodine (PVP-I) vs artificial tears (AT) for adenoviral conjunctivitis (Ad-Cs). Patients with suspected adenoviral conjunctivitis were screened at 9 US clinics. At baseline, 28 of the 56 patients randomized had detectable viral titers. Pilot data suggest that a single in-office administration of 5% PVP-I could decrease viral load and accelerate clinical signs and symptoms improvement in Ad-Cs patients.
