Efficacy and safety of extended depth of focus intraocular lenses in cataract surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Ophthalmology Sep 11, 2019
Liu J, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers tested the safety and effectiveness of extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOLs) in cataract surgery. The literature database obtained all comparative clinical trials involving bilateral implantation of EDOF IOLs in cataract patients. Nine studies with a total of 1,336 eyes have been identified. Findings suggested that EDOF IOLs have advantages for intermediate and near vision compared with monofocal IOLs but also increase the risk of contrast reduction and more frequent halos. EDOF IOLs worked less efficiently for near vision vs trifocal IOLs, but this limitation may be an acceptable compromise for patients due to the retained contrast sensitivity associated with it. Serious postoperative complications have been uncommon, with most studies reporting no adverse events.
