Efficacy and adverse events of oral isotretinoin for acne: A systematic review
British Journal of Dermatology Jan 26, 2018
Vallerand IA, et al. - This research was executed in order to discern the efficacy and safety of isotretinoin in patients with acne vulgaris. A reduction was noted in the acne lesion counts by a greater amount due to isotretinoin when compared to the controls. Findings illustrated that more than half of all adverse events arose from skin dryness. Withdrawal from trials was attributed to the development of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, cheilitis, xerosis, acne flare, photophobia, elevated liver enzymes, decreased appetite, headaches and depressed mood. Authors concluded that isotretinoin was effective in reducing acne lesion counts, but adverse events were common.
