Efficacy and acceptability of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for major depressive disorder: An individual patient data meta-analysis
Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry Dec 26, 2019
Moffa AH, Martin D, Alonzo A, et al. - Researchers determined the efficacy and acceptability of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for managing acute depressive episodes via assessing individual patient data that provided more precise estimates than aggregate data meta-analysis. They conducted a systematic review of placebo-controlled trials on tDCS as only intervention until December 2018; from this, they identified 9 eligible studies (572 participants) for inclusion. Active tDCS vs sham was significantly superior for response (30.9% vs 18.9% respectively), remission (19.9% vs 11.7%), and depression improvement. Further, they observed continuous clinical improvement even after the end of acute tDCS treatment.
