Effects of ultrasound-guided peritendinous and intrabursal corticosteroid injections on shoulder tendon elasticity: A post Hoc analysis of a randomized controlled trial

Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Jan 13, 2021

Hsu PC, Chang KV, Wu WT, et al. - A post hoc secondary analysis of a double-blinded, randomized controlled study with 3 months of follow-up was performed to evaluate if shoulder tendons changed their elasticity after ultrasound-guided peritendinous or intrabursal corticosteroid injections. Researchers included a total of 60 patients with subacromial impingement syndrome. They randomized individuals with unilateral shoulder pain to receive standard ultrasound-guided subacromial or dual-target corticosteroid injections. The outcomes of this study demonstrated that the elasticity of the LHBT and supraspinatus tendons is unlikely to change after a single dose of peritendinous or intrabursal corticosteroid injections. Future research with a shorter follow-up interval is required to confirm if corticosteroid injections can cause transient variations in the tendon’s elasticity.
