Effects of prophylactic oxytocin on bleeding outcomes in women undergoing dilation and evacuation: A randomized controlled trial
Obstetrics and Gynecology Mar 01, 2019
Whitehouse K, et al. - Researchers performed this multisite, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, to investigate the influence of routine use of intravenous oxytocin on the frequency of interventions to control excess blood loss during dilation and evacuation (D&E). From November 2014 to February 2018, prophylactic oxytocin (n=82) or placebo (n=78) was administered to 160 of 337 screened women. Observations revealed no decrease in the frequency of interventions to control bleeding in correlation with prophylactic use of oxytocin during D&E at 18–24 weeks of gestation. However, decreased blood loss and frequency of hemorrhage was evident with oxytocin admininsteration.
