Effects of lid debris debridement combined with meibomian gland expression on the ocular surface MMP-9 levels and clinical outcomes in moderate and severe meibomian gland dysfunction
BMC Ophthalmology Apr 16, 2021
Moon SY, Han SA, Kwon HJ, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective case series study to assess the impacts of lid debris debridement and meibomian gland expression (MGX) on extracellular matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) levels and clinical outcomes of moderate and severe meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Twenty-four patients (48 eyes) with moderate and severe MGD had one session of lid debris debridement using the BlephEx combined with MGX. Lid debris debridement using the BlephEx in combination with MGX improved clinical findings, subjective symptoms, meibomian gland activity, and ocular surface MMP-9 levels in patients with moderate to severe MGD. They recommend BlephEx combined with MGX for lid debris debridement as an effective clinical method for treating moderate to severe MGD.
