Effects of intermittent very-low calorie diet on glycemic control and cardiovascular risk factors in obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A randomized controlled trial
Journal of Diabetes Investigation Aug 04, 2021
Umphonsathien M, Rattanasian P, Lokattachariya S, et al. - High effectiveness of intermittent very-low calorie diet (VLCD) was observed in achieving optimal glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity. Relatively similar effects on diabetes remission were achieved with either 2 days/week or 4 days/week of intermittent VLCD in these patients.
A total of 40 patients were randomized to the control group, to 2 days/week or 4 days/week of intermittent VLCD.
At week 20, both intermittent VLCD groups showed improved glycemic control with significant reductions in glycated hemoglobin levels and insulin resistance index throughout the study periods.
Significant reduction in serum triglyceride, bodyweight, body mass index and fat mass was evident in both VLCD groups.
No serious adverse events occurred.
