Effects of individual placement and support supplemented with cognitive remediation and work-focused social skills training for people with severe mental illness: A randomized clinical trial
JAMA Sep 13, 2019
Christensen TN, Wallstrøm IG, Stenager E, et al. - In this investigator-initiated, 3-group, parallel, assessor-blinded randomized clinical trial, researchers focused on the influences of individual placement and support (IPS) vs IPS with enhancements [IPSE; incorporating cognitive remediation and work-focused social skills training] vs service as usual (SAU) among 720 adults (mean [SD] age, 32.8 [9.9] years; 276 [38.3%] women) with severe mental illness in Denmark. The number of hours in competitive employment or education, as assessed over 18 months follow-up, were the primary outcome. Findings revealed that in IPS, IPSE, and SAU groups, the estimated proportion achieving competitive employment or education was 59.9%, 59.1%, and 46.5%, respectively. Overall, IPS and IPSE appeared viable routes to improve employment and education rates, compared with SAU, in this patient population in Denmark, but there were no additional effects by enhancing IPS.
