Effects of fish oil and curcumin supplementation on cerebrovascular function in older adults: A randomized controlled trial
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Mar 06, 2020
Kuszewski JC, et al. - Among older sedentary overweight/obese adults (n = 152; 50–80 years, body mass index: 25–40 kg/m2), this 16-week double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial was performed to determine how cerebrovascular function, systemic vascular function and cardiometabolic (fasting glucose and blood lipids) and inflammatory (C-reactive protein) biomarkers in people of this age group are influenced by supplementing their diet with fish oil (2000 mg docosahexaenoic acid + 400 mg eicosapentaenoic acid/day), curcumin (160 mg/day) or a combination of both. Findings revealed improvement in biomarkers of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular function as a result of regular supplementation with fish oil but not curcumin. No additional benefits were reported in correlation with the combined supplementation.
