Effects of cigarette prices on intention to quit, quit attempts, and successful cessation among African American smokers
Nicotine & Tobacco Research Jul 23, 2018
Keeler C, et al. - The effects of cigarette price on intention to quit, quit attempts, and successful cessation were assessed among African American smokers in the US. Researchers also assessed if price effects differed by income level and menthol use status. Pooled cross-sectional data from 2006–2007 and 2010–2011 Tobacco Use Supplements to the Current Population Survey was collected to analyze 4,213 African American recent active smokers. Findings revealed insufficiency of tobacco tax policy alone to increase quit attempts or successful cessation among African Americans. They suggest the need for community-based cessation programs tailored towards African American smokers, especially low-income menthol smokers.
