Effects of alternate day calorie restriction and exercise on cardio-metabolic risk factors in overweight and obese adults: An exploratory randomized controlled study
BMC Public Health Sep 20, 2018
Oh M, et al. - Researchers performed an exploratory randomized controlled study to examine the impacts of an 8-week alternate day calorie restriction (ADCR) and exercise program (aerobic and resistance training) on cardio-metabolic risk factors in overweight and obese adults aged 32-40 years. They used the intention to treat method to analyze all 45 participants who were randomized to the four treatment groups: ADCR (n=13), exercise (n=10), exercise and ADCR (n=12), and control (n=10). Findings showed that ADCR and exercise both proved to be beneficial. However, ADCR in combination with exercise was the most effective at inducing beneficial changes in body weight, body composition, and blood lipids such as triglyceride or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and insulin sensitivity in overweight and obese adults.
