Effects of a ketogenic diet in overweight women with polycystic ovary syndrome
Journal of Translational Medicine Mar 05, 2020
Paoli A, et al. - In this 12 weeks, single-arm study, researchers examined the impacts of a ketogenic diet (KD) on women of childbearing age with a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), most common endocrine disorder in women during reproductive age. Fourteen overweight women with PCOS diagnosis were exposed to a 12-week ketogenic Mediterranean diet with phyoextracts (KEMEPHY). After 12 weeks, anthropometric and body composition measurements showed a significant decline in body weight, BMI, fat body mass, and visceral adipose tissue. There was a significant decrease in lean body mass, marginally. Findings suggested that KD can be considered as a valuable nonpharmacological treatment for PCOS. To verify the effect of a KD on the dermatological aspects of PCOS, longer treatment periods should be tested.
