Effectiveness of foot orthoses vs corticosteroid injection for plantar heel pain: The SOOTHE randomized clinical trial
Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy May 31, 2019
Whittaker GA, et al. - In this parallel-group, assessor-blinded randomized trial involving 103 participants (aged 21 to 72 years), researchers compared the efficacy of foot orthoses and corticosteroid injection for plantar heel pain. For this investigation, study participants received prefabricated, arch-contouring foot orthoses or a single ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection. According to findings, corticosteroid injection at week 4 is more effective than foot orthoses, but this effect does not last, and properly contoured foot orthoses at week 12 are more effective than corticosteroid injection. However, patients may not notice a difference between the interventions that are clinically worthwhile.
