Effectiveness of foot orthoses vs corticosteroid injection for plantar heel pain: The SOOTHE randomized clinical trial

Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy Jul 05, 2019

Whittaker GA, et al. - Through a parallel-group, assessor-blinded, randomized clinical trial on 103 people aged 21 to 72 years (63 female) with plantar heel pain, the researchers intended to contrast the effectiveness of foot orthoses and corticosteroid injection for plantar heel pain. Corticosteroid injection was more efficient at week 4 for the primary outcome of foot pain. Although, foot orthoses were observed as more beneficial at week 12. The findings were statistically important, however, the variations among the interventions could not meet the previously estimated minimal important difference value of 12.5 points. Hence, at week 4, corticosteroid injection was more powerful than foot orthoses, however, this effect does not last, whereas, appropriately contoured foot orthoses were more efficient than corticosteroid injection at week 12. It could be a possibility that patients might not feel a clinically important difference between the interventions.
