Effect of time and day of admission on hospital care quality for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation in England and Wales: Single cohort study
BMJ Open Sep 12, 2017
Roberts CM, et al. - The intent here was to ascertain if observed increased weekend mortality correlated with poorer quality of care for patients admitted to hospital with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation. It was deduced that the increased mortality observed in weekend admissions was not readily elucidated via deficiencies in early clinical guideline care. Additional analysis of out-of-hospital factors, specialty care and deaths later in the admission were warranted to ensure effective interventions. This would reduce variation by day of the week of admission.
