Effect of sunscreen application under maximal use conditions on plasma concentration of sunscreen active ingredients: A randomized clinical trial

JAMA Jun 08, 2019

Matta MK, et al. – In this randomized clinical trial that included 24 healthy participants, researchers determine the absorption of the active ingredients (avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule) into the systemic circulation of four commercially available sunscreens. Systemic concentrations > 0.5 ng/mL were reached for all four products following four applications on day 1. Rash was the most common adverse event. The systemic absorption of sunscreen active ingredients identified in this study supports the need for further studies to investigate the significance of these findings.
